This program is designed to equip students with the foundational knowledge required for a successful career in actuarial science, as well as prepare them for further studies in the field. Actuaries utilize a strong background in mathematics, statistics, and economics to measure and manage risk. 

Career Opportunities

Upon completion of the Pre-Actuary Science AS degree, students will have developed strong critical thinking, quantitative reasoning, computational, and analytical skills. Students will be prepared to continue to a bachelor’s degree in actuarial sciences as well as directly to employment. Typical employment would include insurance companies, financial institutions, and government agencies.

Program Outcomes

  1. Communicate mathematical and statistical concepts using appropriate terminology and notation.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency solving a variety application problems in mathematics and statistics.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency using technology to investigate problems and promote understanding.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to complete the first two actuarial examinations, namely Exam FM (Financial
    Mathematics) and Exam P (Probability).

General Education/MnTC Requirements


Refer to the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) Course List  for each of the ten Goal Areas

  • Goal 1: Communication 9 Credits

    Minimum of 9 credit, including the following:
    ENGL 1711 - Composition 1 4 Credits
    ENGL 1712 - Composition 2 2 Credits
    COMM 17XX - 3 Credits

     
  • Goal 2: Critical Thinking 
    Fulfilled when 10 goal areas are completed (40 credits)
     
  • Goal 3: Natural Sciences 7 Credits
    Minimum of two courses from two different disciplines, one of which must be a lab course
     
  • Goal 4: Mathematical/Logical Reasoning 3 Credits
    Met with required program MATH courses.
     
  • Goal 5: History, Social Sciences and Behavioral Sciences 6 Credits
    ECON 1720 and ECON 1730
     
  • Goal 6: Humanities and Fine Arts 3 Credits
     
  • Goal Areas 7-10 Any remaining credits needed to reach 60 credits overall. 
    Select courses to meet at least 6 out of the 10 Goal Areas.

Course Sequence


This course sequence is recommended for a full-time student, but not required. All course prerequisites need to be followed. For specific suggestions, please speak with a Pathway Advisor or the program faculty. Students should consult with the Program Advisor each semester.

Not all courses are offered each semester. A selection of courses is offered summer term. The order in which MNTC goal electives are completed is flexible.

If courses are counted in both the Program Requirements and the MnTC Requirements students may need to complete additional classes to reach the 60 credit total.

Minimum Program Entry Requirements
Students entering this program must meet the following minimum program entry requirements:

Reading: Score of 250+ or grade of “C” or better in READ 0722 or READ 0724 or EAPP 0900 

Writing: Score of 250+ or grade of “C” or better in ENGL 0922 or EAPP 0900 

Adv. Algebra & Functions: Score of 250+ or grade of “C” or better in MATH 0920

Assessment Results and Prerequisites: Students admitted into Saint Paul College programs may need to complete additional courses based on assessment results and course prerequisite requirements. Certain MATH, READ, and ENGL courses have additional prerequisites.
