MDLT 2591 - Clinical Practice

1-9 Variable Credits

In this medical laboratory course, students are provided competency-based instruction in an affiliate hospital/clinic laboratory under the supervision of laboratory professionals. The work-based experience provides an opportunity for students to refine laboratory techniques and apply knowledge learned in the didactic phase in an employment-like setting with direct patient care that offers realistic experiences unavailable in student laboratory sessions. The experience also allows students to enhance non-technical attributes including, but not limited to, communication, critical thinking, multi-tasking, prioritization, and independent work skills. Using competency checklists provided by the College, medical laboratory professionals at the affiliate evaluate student laboratory skills, application of knowledge, professional behaviors and attributes in each department of the clinical laboratory (hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, microbiology, transfusion medicine, and coagulation) and specimen collection and processing skills. Required on-campus afternoons provide learning activities on special topics that assist students in attaining competency in the clinical practice setting. Additional required learning activities assigned by campus faculty that are supplemental to the Clinical Practice competency checklists support and enhance clinical experiences and assist students in maintaining mastery of cognitive theory in identified medical laboratory departments. Must earn a grade of “P” in this course to proceed in MDLT Major coursework. Variable credits 1-9

Prerequisite(s): Grade of “C” or better in all MDLT program requirements except MDLT 2593
